Pike and Prize Catch a perfect match

May 07, 2017

Belhus Racing's up-and-coming three-year-old Prize Catch continued his exciting development with a driving victory in today's Gannons Racing Colours Handicap (Race 7-1400m) at Northam.

The Lindsey Smith-trained youngster appeared well placed on paper and the market agreed, sending him out a $2.10 favourite, and it was a textbook riding display from William 'The Wizard' Pike, who produced the son of Zoffany with a sweetly timed run to get the better of Sharkmouth ($5) late and score by a short neck.

Prize Catch landed in the prime one out/one back position after jumping from barrier four and relished the faster than average tempo carved out by I Do De Claire ($4.60), working through his gears in the straight and running right through the finish line, which suggests he has the capabilities of performing strongly over a mile and beyond.

Since his first public appearance at the Lark Hill barrier trials in November of his two-year-old season the stylish chestnut has always shown above average potential and now into the autumn of his three-year-old season he is starting to make an impact.

While today's assignment was his fourth run back from a let up, and there are plenty of suitable racing options coming up over the next four to six weeks, Prize Catch could still progress towards the $100,000 Belmont Guineas (LR-1600m) at Belmont on Saturday June 24 and the $100,000 Aquanita Stakes (LR-2000m) at Belmont on Saturday July 8.
