A COLT WITH CLASS – BY THE AUTUMN SUN
At the 2025 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, the gavel fell our way at $150,000 for Lot 132—an outstanding colt by the highly regarded stallion THE AUTUMN SUN, from the stakes-placed Savabeel mare Shop Till I Drop.
This colt wasn’t just on our radar—he was the pick of the sale for our long-time bloodstock consultant John Price, the man behind the purchase of triple Group 1 winner BEHEMOTH and more recently the brilliant excitement machine DEEL HER IN.
After four days of inspecting every yearling in the catalogue, John awarded just one colt his coveted “Three Big Ticks” rating—and this was him.
We knew we’d have to dig deep to secure him, and at $150,000, he didn’t come cheap—but make no mistake, it’s our solid opinion that this colt is worth every cent. With his pedigree, his outstanding physical type, fluent movement, and presence, he ticks every box. He’s all class.
THE AUTUMN SUN was the undisputed star of his generation—a 5-time Group 1 winner at two and three and widely regarded as the best racing colt by Redoute’s Choice. Since retiring to stud, he’s already sired multiple Group 1 Classic winners including Autumn Angel, Coco Sun, Vibrant Sun, and rising star Autumn Glow. His better yearlings are in high demand, regularly selling for six figure amounts. Just to give you an idea of what people are paying for them, in the last few months, we’ve seen his sons and daughters sell through the auction rings at both Magic Millions and Inglis sales for $900K, $525k, $520k, $475k, $350k, $320k, $260k, $250k, $240k, $220k, $210k, $200k, $180k, $170k twice, $160k three times, $150k twice, $140k, $130k, $120k, etc. Smart people in the industry pay these amounts because quite simply, THE AUTUMN SUN is a stallion whose progeny can get you to the big races.
His progeny are winning the races that matter. They’re sprinters, milers and stayers, and they’re competing in Derbies, Oaks & Guineas.
This colt’s dam side only adds to the firepower. He’s the second foal of Shop Till I Drop, a stakes-placed mare who won five races from 1600m to 2000m (including four in a row) and was Group 2 placed. His second dam Shopaholic won five, including the Group 2 MRC Angus Armanasco Stakes and Group 3 VRC Vanity Stakes. His third dam Splashing Out won four including the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes and was Group 1 placed in the Ascot Vale Stakes. What’s more, between his second and third dams, all nine runners that they’ve produced to race are winners, with six performing at Stakes level for a combined tally of 32 wins to date. It’s one of those rare, high-performing families that keeps delivering generation after generation.
This exciting colt is being trained by Grant & Alana Williams, Western Australia’s Champion trainers.
