BOBBY BENZINE notched up the third win of his career at Ascot yesterday when taking out the opening event on the programme, the 57-68 handicap over 2200m.

In just a small field of 6 runners, jockey Michael Frethy seized the intiative and took his mount to the front going out of the first corner, a lead he held comofrtably until taken on by Shot Of Glory who went around the field to try and pinch the race at the 900m mark. Frethy got straight to work with Bobby not allowing the freewheeling Neville Parnham trained horse to get away with it and the pair put a space on their four opponents. With 250m to go, Bobby Benzine started to reel in the tiring leader and eventually went on to win eased down by just under two lengths with the delighted Frethy marking his long awaited return to the winners circle with a discreet wave of the whip, a salute destined for heaven in recognition of the recent passing of his Father back in his native New Zealand…

After 15 starts in this campaign, Bobby Benzine is now headed for a month off before returning to work once again for a crack at some better staying events…
