As any owner or punter would know, it’s always a big job for any racehorse to win first up over 1600m, but that task certainly wasn’t beyond Rio Rogue at Northam on Thursday when he powered home to win in trying conditions. The three-year-old, by WA’s nine times Champion stallion Blackfriars, and under a textbook ride by apprentice Victoria Corver, settled midfield off the back of a solid tempo, and got home down the middle of the track to win by a length. It was a very good training effort by veteran trainer Ivan Haggerty who’s always had a good opinion of the horse. This was Rio Rogue’s first win from his eight starts, but having always shown promise, he looks in store for a very good preparation now that he’s broken through. Run in pouring rain, on a pretty bleak old day at Northam, the win demonstrated that he’s got no issue with the sting out of the track, and that should certainly stamp him as a horse to follow as we progress through the Winter racing season…
