Belhus Racing‘s Victorian-based Deep Purple was in front a stride before and a stride after the post, but behind when it mattered most when beaten a lip in the Bet365 Maiden Plate (Race 1-2447m) at Geelong last Sunday.

The Robbie Laing-trained four-year-old, who is by Belhus stallion Illustrious Blue, showed her liking for the mile-and-a-half journey and grass track, when producing her best effort yet and almost getting the cash for her supporters as a 40 to 1 chance.

Deep Purple will now head towards the Super Vobis Maiden Plate over 2400 metres at Bendigo next Thursday September 28, where she’ll get an opportunity to become former world class European stayer Illustrious Blue‘s second winner after the Darren Weir-trained Navy Blue saluted over 1600 metres at Echuca on July 27.
